All CAM Africa Stainless Steel stainless steel kitchen sinks are manufactured from austenitic stainless steel, with a Chrome-nickel-iron alloy of 16-22% chromium (Cr), 6-22% nickel (Ni), and low carbon non- magnetic properties, when annealed.
Chromium provides the steel with a protective layer, by binding with the surrounding oxygen and forming a chromium (III) oxide. In such a molecule, there will be three oxygen atoms bound to two chromium atoms. This layer will be very difficult to penetrate for the remaining oxygen in the air or even water in wet conditions.
If the chromium oxide layer is dented or scratched, it will rapidly reform and continue to protect the steel. In addition, nickel is added to austenite the iron in order to stabilize its molecular structure when added in significant amounts as in the case of grade 202 stainless steel.
